What does the M&A market look like in 2023?

Partners& co-hosted a dinner for some of the senior business leaders in the Midlands M&A community with CFC Underwriting at The Grand Hotel, Birmingham on Thursday 16 February.

The key theme that emerged was the need to focus on people and culture when looking to conclude successful mergers and acquisitions – the importance of looking after your people throughout deals, the critical nature of communication and the human side of the due diligence process. The guests agreed that achieving these three elements would deliver sustainable outcomes and successful deals.

The specialist M&A advisory team within Partners& has collectively acted on over 150 buyouts, disposals, listings and mergers and is well placed to support the wider corporate finance and investment community. The team provides a 360-degree approach to advice, working with clients from pre-deal preparation through to completion and post-deal risk management planning.

CFC Underwriting sponsored the event, which provided Joe Perrett, Product Manager and his colleagues from the Warranty and Indemnity team the opportunity to learn more about the Midlands market. Joe joined the Q&A panel to share insights into current deal trends and the team’s specialist knowledge of SME deals in the sectors that appealed to many in the room.

John Handley, Non-Executive Director of Frontier Development Capital, shared his perception of the political and economic environment and the current impact on deal flow, together with his personal journey as a champion of the regional M&A / Corporate Finance sector and the importance of strong networking relationships to also do great things for good causes.

Phil Barton, CEO of Partners&, reflected on his approach to M&A both past and present and shared his insight and experience gleaned from being involved (as an acquirer and a vendor) in more than 55 mergers and acquisitions throughout his 40-year career. He spoke passionately about the importance of company culture being the key to long term success.

The event was the first in a series of exclusive gatherings aimed to bring the M&A community together, share best practice and navigate the challenges of the current economic environment. Details of future events will be available on the Partners& M&A page.
